MODERN ARCHITECTURE & THE CITY

Knowledge and Social Memory of Modern Architecture

This one-day symposium brings together a multidisciplinary group of scholars from across the region to examine modern architecture and its relationship to the city. The morning session explores the relationship between monuments and power,and the commissioning of monuments as an attempt to shape new social memory for the modern nation-state. In the afternoon session, we bring into conversation two different disciplinary approaches in the study of the modern architecture - architecture history and curatorial research  - to assess the question of how modernism can be translated across cultural contexts as well as how modern architecture can exist in a museum and be communicated effectively through an exhibition.

Speakers include Thanavi Chotpradit (Silpakorn University, Bangkok), Roger Nelson (NTU, Singapore), Chang Jiat Hwee (NUS, Singapore) and Shirley Surya (M+, Hong Kong)
