A `"meet the maker" storytelling and art workshop by Author-Illustrator-Teacher Ammi Leong. It is a special opportunity for children to meet with a picture book illustrator like Ammi. Two picture books by Ammi Leong will be read to the children. In the first book, they will learn about the Bornean Sun Bear (the smallest bear in the world) and the wonderful work of the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC). In the second book, children will learn about the unique culture and lives of a group of young pupils from the Kelabit community in the Bario highlands of North Sarawak who wear traditional loincloths ("cawat" cloths). Set in the 1950s, the story tells of these resilient children who trekked a long distance (7 hours across forest areas) to return home from school, breaking their long journey overnight at a village longhouse.

Ammi will also share her creative process with children such as her Borneo field trip experiences (to BSBCC and the Bario Highlands), photos, research and sketches that culminated in her rich and colourful illustrations for these two picture books. Ammi will also guide children in creating a simple picture book of their own inspired by these stories The session will be conducted in English. All materials will be provided.

After the storytelling session, kids will be guided, step-by-step, by Uncle NAI to create characters for their own story using the "pen-on-paper art" illustration technique used by Uncle NAI to create this book. Uncle NAI will first show us his own "pen-on-paper" illustration style and various examples before helping children at the workshop find their own style.
