Kaki Lima is a fun strategy game about pedestrians navigating the five-foot walkways of George Town, Penang. It is suitable for all ages and it aims to serve as a creative tool to help reclaim kaki limas as a shared space by furthering conversations about livability and community values while raising the public’s awareness of the rich historical, social and cultural values within these nostalgic walkways.

WORLD-BUILDING WITH IZAT ARIF: DRAWING AND SCULPTING

How do you build a whole new world from your imagination? Members of the public are invited to participate in a full-day workshop with Izat Arif exploring how to build the basic components of an imagined entity. Learn how to make a logo, a monument and imagined landscapes for a world borne from a single person’s obsession. Each participant is expected to bring one object they love to participate in the workshop. No prior experience in drawing or sculpture necessary.

Line and Wash

Fee: RM180/pax (inclusive of watercolour paper, paint & drawing pen - for class use)
Line and Wash is an art process where lines are used to define shapes, forms and details, while the washes develop the colour and value range. Lines are usually done by pen and ink, with translucent watercolour added to enhance the ink drawing, resulting in beautiful works of art. This is a favourite sketching technique used by many urban/travel sketchers.

Little Syam Book Binding: Secret Belgian

Secret Belgian Binding is a method of bookbinding that uses a primary and a secondary sewing, resulting in a distinct thread pattern on the cover and spine of the finished book. Invented by Anne Goy, a Belgian artist, in 1986, it has a similar appearance to Japanese stab bindings with an opened flat and closed spine.

Little Syam Book Binding: Coptic Stitch

The coptic stitch bookbinding method creates an exposed spine that opens up the book completely flat. Invented by the Copts, early Christians in Egypt, the stitch has a distinctive braid or chain pattern.

SHORT STORY WORKSHOP

Join us for a short story workshop conducted by Elaine Chiew, a writer and a visual arts researcher. She is the author of The Heartsick Diaspora and other stories (Penguin Random House SEA and Myriad Editions UK, 2019 & 2020), as well as the compiler and editor of Cooked Up: Food Fiction From Around the World (New Internationalist, 2015). Twice winner of the Bridport Short Story Competition, she has published numerous stories in anthologies in the UK, US and Singapore. She also writes flash fiction and has been named Wigleaf Top 50 twice, nominated for the Pushcart Prize four times and published in Best Small Fictions (Sonder Press, 2019) and Dzanc Books’ Best of the Web (2010). She currently writes freelance for ArtReview Asia and ArtsEquator. Elaine lives in Singapore.
