A Torrid Tour of Books Banned in the 1990s
Talk by Amir Muhammad
725 books were banned in Malaysia in the 1990s by the Home Ministry. This talk will look at the titles and categorise them according to language and theme; and also look at news reports of rationales behind the more high-profile bans, in order to consider what elements exist in this forbidden terrain. For example, did you know that there were more banned books in that decade with “Arqam” in the title (54) compared to the combined “sex” and “seks” (43)?
As some of the titles are very vague with no synopsis given, audience members will also be encouraged to imagine what those books could have possibly been about, and what dangers they could have posed to society. Visuals of the book covers will also be shown in order for us to make some deductions about design commonalities that need to be avoided if we don’t want to get banned in Malaysia.

Apokalips: 1990s Kuala Lumpur – the Rainbow and the Dust
Talk by Eddin Khoo
7 Dec 2024, 3:00pm
Built on limestock rock and shifting earth, the ‘Muddy Confluence’ of Kuala Lumpur witnessed dramatic watersheds over two centuries. While its origins began with tin mining, by the latter parts of the 19th and early parts of the 20th century and following its great razing, Kuala Lumpur had transformed into a principal administrative and cultural center. Steady and deliberate development ensued till the advent of Mahathirsm and the economic boom of the 1990’s. Apokalips: 1990’s Kuala Lumpur- The Rainbow and the Dust is a historical, but also intimate account of the social, cultural and political blast of the 1990’s, from Kuala Lumpur as a burgeoning cultural capital and political swamp to her streets, brimming with protest, with the advent of Reformasi.
