Field Work: Performing Politics on the Padang

Mark Teh will share a short lecture performance titled Field Work: Performing Politics On The Padang in this session.  Over the duration of 30 minutes, he revisits performances and protests he witnessed between 1998 to the present, on the peripheries and Padang of Dataran Merdeka.   Weaving together the personal and the political, it meanders around Reformasi, BERSIH, & Occupy Dataran, as well as Merdeka Day parades, Emily of Emerald Hill, & The Actors Studio - the original, underground one.  There's also stuff about the typology of colonial padangs, and the trials of teenage dating at the Dataran.

Mark Teh is a performance maker, researcher, and curator based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. His diverse, collaborative projects take on documentary, speculative and generative forms, and address the entanglements of history, memory and counter-mapping.  His practice is situated primarily in performance, but also operates via exhibitions, education, social interventions, curating and writing. 

Recent projects include directing the critically-acclaimed performances A Notional History, Version 2020, Baling, and Gostan Forward, the video essay fragments of Tuah, and co-curating The Breathing of Maps and Jalan-jalan di Asia: Walking Dictionary.  Mark's projects been presented at YPAM - Yokohama International Performing Arts Meeting (2022, 2019, 2016), Kunstenfestivaldesarts, Brussels (2022), MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum, Chiang Mai (2020), Salihara, Jakarta (2019, 2018), Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre (2019), Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media [YCAM] (2019), BIPAM, Bangkok (2022, 2018), OzAsia Festival, Adelaide (2018), Fast Forward Festival, Athens (2018), MMCA Seoul (2018), SPIELART Festival, Munich (2017), Haus de Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (2017), and Bangkok Arts & Culture Centre (2022, 2017), amongst others.  Mark graduated with an MA in Art and Politics from Goldsmiths, University of London, and is a member of Five Arts Centre.
