From the 1970’s, batik painting moved in new directions. Influenced by the National Cultural Congress of 1971, artists pushed their techniques towards more abstract compositions, integrating local traditional decorative and design principles, as well as motifs from Islam and the region. Artists also continued to make work that dealt with identity, the post-colonial self and community. Artists looked to tradition and the past, imagined as a peaceful and pure place, to reaffirm national pride.
