REINVENTING THE LANGUAGE: Batik and the Contemporary

This selection of contemporary artworks from Malaysia is not necessarily painting-based, but features the use of batik as technique, process, or material. Works in this section are evidence of the new critical directions that batik provides for Malaysian contemporary artists. They have deconstructed some of the cherished myths surrounding batik, drawing on its cultural and ideological significance to explore contemporary issues and constructed national narratives. This section also features a small selection of contemporary batik artworks from Indonesia as a point of comparison to the larger Malaysian narrative.
